War conditions prevail. On April 13, 77 faculty an staff members of the University and Hadassah are killed when a convoy to Mount Scopus is attacked. In August, the provisional Israeli governement recognizes the importance of the Hebrew University "as a central scientific institution of the State of Israel" and its duty "to continue its activities and develop them".
