  Projects / Together against Parkinsons!

Two of the world's leading brain research centers in Jerusalem and in Amsterdam are determined to make significant contributions in the development of revolutionary treatments to fight Parkinson's disease.

With the help of the Dutch Friends of the Hebrew University, the two centers launched a unique joint research project in 2004, which focusses on the development of new treatments for Parkinson's disease. Treatments which hold out the promise of improving the quality of life for patients who suffer from Parkinson's.

The Five initial goals of the joint research project are:

  1. Identification of the specific brain region and groups of nerve cells involved in generating the Parkinson tremor and other signs and symptoms.
  2. Development of new methods for real-time analysis of electrical signals in the brain of Parkinson patients.
  3. Development of a novel technique to turn off the abnormal electrical activity involved in Parkinson's disease.
  4. Employment of this technique to perform deep-brain stimulation in Parkinson patients in order to ameliorate the characteristic tremor.
  5. Exploring the role of neurotransmitters such as dopamine in Parkinson's disease.

The project ‘Together against Parkinson's!’ has from the start been adopted by a group of donors for its entire five year research period.

The last two years of the project are financed by a bequest that was received by our Foundation in 2002. The bequest was earmarked for the execution of research in the field of diseases of the brain and of diseases that are related to (old) age.
